BUSINESS COMPLIANCE REVIEW

Your Next Step: Provide Your Business Documents

Your intake is complete. Now provide the applicable business, tax and compliance documents needed for your review through the designated secure client portal.

Business and Entity Documents

Provide the documents that apply:

  • Business formation documents
  • Articles of Organization or Incorporation
  • Operating agreement, partnership agreement or bylaws, when relevant
  • IRS EIN confirmation, when available
  • IRS entity-election correspondence
  • S corporation election documentation, when applicable
  • State registration documents relevant to the review
  • Documents showing significant ownership changes

Tax Return Filing History

Provide available copies of:

  • Most recently filed federal business tax return
  • Prior federal business tax returns relevant to your concerns
  • State business tax returns
  • Amended business returns, when applicable
  • Extension records
  • Federal estimated-tax payment records
  • State estimated-tax payment records

If you believe a required return was never filed, identify the applicable tax year in your intake rather than creating a document that does not exist.

Payroll Records

If the business has or had employees, provide applicable records such as:

  • Forms 941
  • Forms 940
  • Forms W-2
  • Form W-3
  • Payroll reports
  • Federal payroll-tax payment records
  • State payroll-tax filings
  • State unemployment filings
  • Payroll-related IRS or state notices

Contractor and Information-Return Records

If applicable, provide:

  • Forms 1099 issued by the business
  • Related information-return filing records
  • Records showing contractor payments
  • Notices related to Forms 1099 or information returns

Provide Any Relevant Tax Notices

If the business has received IRS or state correspondence related to the matters being reviewed, provide complete copies through the secure client portal.

Pay particular attention to notices involving:

  • Missing returns
  • Late filings
  • Payroll taxes
  • Information returns
  • Entity classification
  • Estimated taxes
  • State registration
  • Tax balances
  • Collection activity
  • Response deadlines

Providing a notice for review does not automatically expand this engagement to include notice response, collection work or representation.

Financial Records Relevant to the Review

When applicable, provide organized financial information that helps establish the business's filing and compliance history, such as:

  • Profit and loss statements
  • Balance sheets
  • Year-end financial statements
  • General ledger reports when directly relevant
  • Owner/shareholder contribution records
  • Owner/shareholder distribution records
  • Officer compensation information

Do not provide unnecessary banking information unless specifically requested through the secure client process.
